Federal Pizza, An Escape Room, & the Tucson Temple Dedication

What a wonderful weekend Nick & shared together!

On Friday night, I came home starving...to a starving husband. We immediately set out sights on trying a new restaurant called Postinos over off of Central in Phoenix, where all of our 3 other fave restaurants (Federal Pizza, Joyride Taco, and the Windsor) are located. The wait at Postino's was far too long for our taste, so wandered over to Federal Pizza, where we enjoyed the most delicious antipasta and Sweet Potato Pizza! Afterwards, Nick indulged me, and we walked over to Churn, where I had my favorite mint and cookies ice cream.

We spent the evening at home, playing video games, reading The Work and the Glory Book 1 (I haven't mentioned that miracle yet, have I?!?)***, and just being together.

***Side note: it's about time I mention the miracle of The Work and the Glory series! For those of you not familiar, the Work and the Glory series is a favorite for many Mormons. The series (9 books) inserts a fictional family into the early history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I read the whole series in college, and have badly wanted Nick to be able to read it, since we visited so many church history sites over the summer and he is so new in the church. Well, the series is expensive, and so we had talked about buying it for me for Christmas. Just a few days before school started, Nick and I walked into Goodwill looking for a stool for my classroom. Nick suggested we go and look at the videotapes (for our new VCR). On the way to the videotapes, I stopped dead in my tracks. There they were! There, at a Goodwill in Phoenix, Arizona, were all but 2 of the Work and the Glory series. In great condition, and for $3 dollars a piece, we snatched them up right away, ordered the other 2 on Amazon, and now boast the complete set! Score! Goodwill miracle! (And yes, we did find a stool for my classroom as well).

Anyways...on Saturday, Nick and I slept in, read a bunch of articles and watched a bunch of videos on life in North Korea (how sad!), and moseyed around the house. Nick really wanted to do an escape room, and was wonderful enough to find a great deal on one, as well as invite our friends Sam and Kirsten to come along. We went to Escape Zone in Tempe, where we escaped from Rush Hour! The whole premise of the escape room was that we were on the Phoenix lightrail, hurtling toward our impending death unless we could break into the control room and stop the train. A begrudged employee had set the lightrail on a suicide course, and a compassionate homeless man had left clues to help those passengers stuck inside get out. We solved puzzles with mirrors, magnets, and black lights, and made it out with almost 3 minutes to spare!

Afterwards, we went to Water N' Ice, where Nick had purchased an amazing Groupon. The worker was super nice, and suggested we get a half gallon of ice cream and an XL shaved ice to get the best deal possible. Total win--I got a half gallon of chocolate brownie & mint chocolate chip ice cream!
That evening, we stayed at home, hoping to watch the cultural celebration for the Tucson LDS temple dedication, but we could not seem to get the recording to work :( Instead, we finished up Last Chance U on Netflix.

Sunday morning we were able to sleep in before heading the to the Tucson Temple Dedication broadcast at noon. How sacred! What inspiring words and what a peaceful spirit could be felt as another House of the Lord comes to dot the earth. I especially loved the dedicatory prayer, where President Uchtdorf pronounced blessings upon the physical temple walls and all that would enter in. Nick and I were able to visit the Tucson temple during the Open House, and are excited to go back now that it has been dedicated! Sunday afternoon, we watched Forever Strong, read more Work and the Glory, made chicken pot pie for dinner, and worked on home improvement projects.

What a blessed life! "Tis the gift to be simple, tis the gift to be free!"
