On a Friday after work, we headed over to Lake Tahoe for some chilly, snowy fun. When we arrived, it was much colder than the Bay Area and we were ready to hit the hay.
We got to exploring the next day. First, we headed to Chimney Beach, which is the site of an old caretaker's cabin, with the surviving chimney. I was disappointed that there was no more information about what year the cabin was built, why the caretaker lived on a beach etc., but alas, this history nerd couldn't find anything. The beach was beautiful, and the water of Tahoe deep blue and green.
After Chimney Beach, we headed to a hike up to a vista point, which gorgeous views of the lake below.
We then wandered around the little town, and found a precious Christmas ornament to take back home. We then spent the rest of the afternoon lounging around, solving a murder mystery. We had delicious sushi and then played board games until we (I) was especially exhausted.
The trip back was most eventful because of the snowfall overnight. There were chain restrictions in place, and that caused an almost 2 hour hold up getting out of Tahoe. As we drove past Donner Lake, I thought of the fated Donner Party and trying to cross the Sierra Nevadas in a covered wagon with the cold and snow. And I felt very grateful that, despite the slowdown, we had a much easier time making it back to civilization than they did.
So grateful to get away to the beautiful and wintery scenery. Thank you Lake Tahoe for our first snow of this season!
