Destination: LDS Missouri Church History Tour

I grew up in the Midwest my whole life, but had never had the opportunity to visit the LDS church history sites in Missouri. We had been to Nauvoo, Illinois (another very popular and famous LDS church history site), but never Missouri. I was very excited to have the opportunity to visit the myriad of sites with my husband.

We started first with visiting Independence, Missouri, a short 20 minute drive from the heart of Kansas City. There is an LDS visitor center on what would have been an LDS temple. Due to persecution in the 1830's, the temple was never built. The land that was dedicated for the temple has now been divided between three faiths: the LDS church, the Church of Christ, and the Community of Christ. After touring the Independence Visitors Center, we walked across the street to peek at the cornerstones laid out for the temple. We also toured the Community of Christ temple. We spent the sunset wandering around outside the Kansas City temple, which is just absolutely beautiful!

The next day, we drove out of the Kansas City area to visit Liberty Jail and the Visitors Center

We then drove about an hour North to Far West, where we viewed the original cornerstones laid for the Far West temple in the 1800's. This temple was also never built to the intense persecution faced by the Latter-day Saints in Missouri.

Then, we drove another hour north to Adam-ondhi-Ahman, where LDS church members believe that one day, Christ will appear on the American continent. What a beautiful piece of land! How peaceful! We then drove on to Nauvoo, Illinois!
