After an amazing time in Colorado, we drove all the way to Missouri! We stopped in Kansas City (Missouri side) and visited the National World War I Museum. WOW. First off, who would have ever thought that the national World War I musem was in Kansas City, MO?!?! Not I! We didn't either until we were looking up the top things to do in Kansas City, and the museum kept coming up.
We spent a whole afternoon wandering through this monster of a museum. Even though I'm a history teacher, I really don't know that much about World War I. I've always focused my reading (and I teach) about World War II. It was eye-opening and moving to learn more about "the Great War" and to hear accounts of those that lived during these turbulent times. Also really cool is the viewing tour. See that giant tower in the background of the first picture? You can actually go up the tour in an elevator from like the 1940's and see the views of the city from the top (see 3rd picture). There is also a smaller gallery to the right of the tour where there are hand painted murals from the 1940's that were painted in honor of the victims of the war, particularly those from Kansas City.
We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this museum to anyone that is passing through this area in the Midwest. Being avid museum visitors, this is definitely on the top of the list of best museums!
