During the dead of night Tuesday, August 17 to the morning of Wednesday, August 18 2010, the Southview rock was demolished. Destroyed. Smashed to pieces. Several students posted photos on Facebook who discovered the damage during the night. I arrived at school at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning to find the rock destroyed. I took a picture. And posted it on Facebook, one of the most popular social networking sites of 2010. Within 24 hours, the photo received 57 comments and most of Southview had found out about the destruction, whether from photos, actually seeing the demolished rock, or word of mouth from other SV students.
Thursday morning, the local news ran a story about the spirit rock. http://www.wtol.com/Global/story.asp?S=13009186
The point I'm trying to make is that by posting a photo on Facebook, the public got the story 24 hours before they saw it on the news. Social networking is much more timely than print or broadcast (although I still think both are important) :)
One more thing: just because social networking is faster doesn't mean it's as credible. I could have photo-shopped that photo of the rock. Make sure to check your sources, get first-hand accounts, and check things out for yourself.
RIP SV Spirit Rock
